about

Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis
Recorded at Montmatre Copenhagen, July 10, 1984

The sense of complete commitment comes across in every bar of the music created by the two men. Despite his move to Europe in the Sixties, Griffin made regular trips back across the Atlantic for specific engagements. On these gigs he has usually been backed by a rythm section containing drummer Kenny Washington and often Curtis Lundy and pianist Mulgrew Miller. In 1984 the piano stool was occupied by Harry Pickens, a hard driving player ideally suited to the leaders; a year after the band played at Copenhagen's Montmatre (where these present tracks were recorded).

Sadly music such as this cannot be repeated for Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis passed away on 3 November, 1986 at the age of 65. The jazz world mourned the passing of a talented, likeable and unique figure but Johnny Griffin continues to keep the flag flying for those who believe in virile, exciting music. Griff told Valerie Wilmer "I'm just a hornblower. I write some nice ballads but actually I'm just a hornblower. Give me a good blues tune and a swinging rythm section and that's all I want. I don't care about arrangements. Beacuse this is jazz - spontaneous expression. How you feel now".
