about

Disc One
This first recorded performance of "After You've Gone" shows the Fats Waller influence, and the beat is more constant and predictable than in later Tatum. Even at this young age Art seemingly knew how to "bend" the sound of the piano, a percussion instrument, to produce horn-like tones. This effect can be heard in both hands. These transcriptions offer levels of pianistic artistry that have left generations of jazz pianists shaking their hands in wonder.

Disc Two
This is a special disc that offers a variety of titles recorded in 1939, when Art Tatum had matured from his early exuberance into a confident and secure performer. "Hallelujah" is the earliest Tatum recording of this tune that he subsequently played in many different ways, though usually based on stride as in this second chorus.

With Art Tatum, more becomes still more with repeated listening. The more one listens the more one will ease into an understanding and enjoyment of deeper elements of Tatum's style that become audible underneath the pleasures of melody, harmony, tempo and beat. As each layer reveals itself we become privy to the inner thoughts of this phenomenal pianist.
