about

From June 1940 to November 1944 Teddy Wilson led a sextet, and for much of that time, it was in residence at Café Society, first at the original downtown spot, later at the uptown branch as well.
Though the sextet's instrumentation was that of a traditional small group, the music is made was not dixielandish at all, but scarely in the swing idiom - a jazz style which Wilson had done much to establish as the dominant one at the time. There were not many pianists in the mainstream of jazz then who were not to a greater extend influenced - or at least touched - by Wilson's clarity of line, crispness of touch, suppleness of rythm and impeccable harmonic sense.
