about

Teddy Wilson soared to a position of national recognition and acclaim during his tenure with Benny Goodman, his incomparably polished, lyrical, and swinging contribution to the trio and quartet recordings, concerts, and broadcast appearances, as well as his own solos and series of recording dates with Billie Holiday , continually adding to his longstanding reputation among musicians and fans.

Contemporaneous with this commercially produced material was a series of solos Wilson recorded for a limited edition label called "Teddy Wilson School for Pianists". These ten solos were recorded between April 1938 and January 1939 and were first made available to the larger public in 1984, when, along with five alternate takes, they were issued on Merit 23, itself now a long sought-after collector's item. Perhaps the rares of all Wilson recordings, with this current release of the master's takes, these "scool" solos are once again, after 60 years, back in common domain.
