He was one of the greatest musicians jazz ever produced, perhaps - and few, if any, will argue against this - the greatest. But Louis Armstrong's scope went far beyond jazz, to place him among the most powerful and influental creative forces in American music. Music? Well, actually that was the major part of his magic, but Louis' reach was even greater, for he was consummate entertainer, and while he gave us some of the most awesome moments in American musical history, he also offered a personality and charm that instantly melted hearts, even of people who looked askance at jazz.
