about

This is the kind of music which does not require detailed analysis. It strides effortlessly across all stylistic and time barriers, charm and validity. There are moments to savour of course - the outright hints barriers, charm and validity. There are moments to savour of course - the outright hints at Lester Young's phrases during Lester Leaps In for example but it is the totality of the music which is impressive. Zoot Sims was a man of judgement when it came to selecting material from the All American Song book for he knew it all.

The two men heard here had so very much in common that they deserve to be bracketed together as one of the great duos of jazz along with such memorable pairings as Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti, Ruby Braff and George Barnes and, of course, Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. This is music in great tradition of jazz played by two experts. Let Dave Gelly have the last word about Zoot's artistry in these, the closing years of his life; "he had reached that rare stage of mastery at which he could merely play the tune and make it sound as though he had just invented it"
